Where to Photograph Your Rental Supercar in Dubai

Location Matters as Much as the Car

A supercar parked outside your building gives you maybe half the photo a Lamborghini Urus or Rolls-Royce Cullinan can deliver against the Dubai skyline. The city was built with dramatic backdrops in mind: glass towers downtown, an open waterfront in Marina, open desert half an hour away in either direction. The difference between a forgettable shot and one worth putting in a portfolio is almost always the spot and the time of day, not the lens. Below are places you can simply drive to and shoot in public space, no permits or private access needed.

Downtown and Burj Khalifa

Burj Park, the waterfront promenade directly across the lake from Burj Khalifa, is the obvious choice and the one that actually works: the tower fills the frame, entry is free, and you can leave the car at Dubai Mall's parking or on a nearby street and walk in. Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, the wide road running along the base of the tower, gives a striking backdrop too, but it is a live traffic lane: stopping there is not an option, find legal parking close by instead. In the same area, the Museum of the Future building on Sheikh Zayed Road works as a backdrop on its own, its calligraphy-wrapped facade needs no Burj Khalifa in the shot, and across the road DIFC's Gate Avenue and the Gate Building add a more geometric, architectural look.

Marina and Palm Jumeirah

Dubai Marina Walk runs along the water for several kilometres with yachts and towers in frame, and it is the most convenient spot for anyone picking up a car right in Marina, our own office is in Princess Tower a short walk from the promenade. Cayan Tower, the twisted skyscraper, deserves its own mention, its unusual silhouette works well both in daylight and lit up at night. You cannot drive onto JBR Beach itself, but the walkway with a view of the Ain Dubai wheel on Bluewaters Island gives a striking modern backdrop with no detour required. On Palm Jumeirah, the public promenade at The Pointe, facing Atlantis, or the area around Nakheel Mall are the easiest options. The trunk road of the Palm itself is a busy stretch with no shoulder to pull onto, and parking wardens on the island are active, so it is not the place to stop.

Desert Roads at Sunset

Sunset in the desert gives a completely different shot: red sand, long shadows, no buildings anywhere on the horizon. The paved public road around Al Qudra and Love Lake runs through open desert and is popular with photographers precisely because of its wide shoulders and light traffic in the evening. For a supercar shot at sunset, the tarmac is enough, and driving a low sports car with limited clearance off the asphalt onto sand is not a good idea under any circumstances. A Few More Spots for Variety

La Mer and Kite Beach give a shot you do not get elsewhere in Dubai, the car, the beach and the skyline in one frame, and parking near both is open and usually easy to find on a weekday during the day. City Walk, a pedestrian district with street art and greenery close to Downtown, suits tighter, less panoramic shots, and it has covered parking for hot afternoons. For a contrast to all the glass and steel, drive over to Al Seef on Dubai Creek, an old-style heritage waterfront with wooden dhows on the water that looks unexpectedly good next to a supercar, and it is a genuine fifteen to twenty minutes from Downtown.

Light and Time of Day

The best light in Dubai, like almost anywhere, is the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset: soft side light, long shadows, a warm sky. Midday sun sits almost directly overhead and is harsh, leaving hard glare on the bodywork and deep shadows underneath. From May to September the daytime heat adds haze that reduces contrast, so shooting early morning while the air is still clear works better than the middle of the day. Downtown and Marina's skyline lighting comes on after sunset and stays on all night, which opens up a separate option for night shots on a longer exposure.

• Casual personal photos of yourself and the car in a public place are fine, but a commercial shoot with a crew, props or a drone needs a permit from the relevant city authority, check the current requirements before booking a professional shoot.
• Stopping in a live traffic lane on a highway or on the Palm's trunk road is illegal and dangerous, use a marked parking spot or a shoulder off the carriageway instead.

Which Car to Pick

Bold silhouettes work best against the city's architecture: the Lamborghini Urus and Huracan Tecnica, Ferrari Roma or 296 GTB, Rolls-Royce Ghost and Cullinan, and the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG in the Brabus 900 Rocket Edition. Driver requirements are the same across every model, 21 years old with at least a year of driving experience, and there is no deposit. Minimum rental is one day, so if you only need the car for a single day of shooting, that is just a standard daily rental with no short-term surcharge.
