A Romanian citizen needs only a passport and a Romanian driving licence to rent a car in Dubai: Romania is in the EU, and EU licences are accepted in the UAE without an International Driving Permit. You must be 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience. Every car has a refundable deposit from AED 1,000, and the most affordable cars in our fleet start at AED 109 a day.

Licence and documents

All 27 EU member states are on the UAE Ministry of Interior list, Romania included. The licence is in Latin script, so no translation is needed, and the car is released on your passport and licence. At a police stop you will be asked for your licence, your passport or a copy, and the car documents, which are kept in the glovebox. A second driver also shows a licence and passport and is added to the contract.

Many Romanians come to Dubai to work. While you are a tourist, your Romanian licence is valid. Once you hold a residence visa it is not, and rental companies will ask for a UAE licence. Holders of EU licences exchange them at an RTA centre in a day without a test, for a fee of about AED 900.

How Romanians usually travel to Dubai

There are direct flights from Bucharest, taking about five hours, while other Romanian cities usually connect through a hub. Dubai is two hours ahead of Romania in winter and one in summer. Trips tend to fall into two types. The first is a holiday of about a week, usually in autumn, winter or spring when the heat eases. The second is a visit to friends or family working in the UAE, which often stretches to two or three weeks with the car in daily use. If your flight lands in another emirate rather than Dubai, ask us about delivery there when booking.

A week's budget: what is included and what is extra

The rental price includes insurance and 250 km per day. Delivery and return anywhere in Dubai are free on rentals of 7 days or more; for shorter rentals they cost AED 210 for both directions together. Fuel, Salik, parking and any fines are extra.

  • Rental: a Mazda 3 2025 costs AED 980 for a week as of November 2026.
  • Fuel: a full tank in an economy car is about AED 150. An attendant comes to the car; you name an amount or say full tank.
  • Salik: a normal week of sightseeing usually means 4 to 10 gate crossings, roughly AED 20 to 60. A crossing costs AED 6.30 at peak hours (6:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and Saturday), AED 4.20 at other times and nothing from 1:00 to 6:00.
  • Parking: paid almost everywhere in central areas, through an app or a meter.

Salik is a little like the rovinieta in that the tag is already in the car and you buy nothing, but you pay per gate crossing rather than for a period. You settle actual crossings with us after the rental, with no markup. Abu Dhabi has its own Darb system, billed separately.

Paying with a Romanian bank card

Visa and Mastercard cards from Romanian banks work in the UAE. Multi-currency cards are fine too, as long as international payments are enabled. Tell your bank about the trip. If a terminal offers to charge you in lei, choose dirhams instead: your own bank's conversion is usually better. When you pay by card, the rental amount may be held as a pre-authorisation and charged at the end. We accept cash as well.

Affordable cars for a week or a month

Prices are as of November 2026, and the current price is on each car page. Cars in the table include insurance and 250 km per day, and the deposit starts from AED 1,000.

The Raize is the cheapest option on our standard terms: AED 750 a week, AED 2,490 a month. The 2023 Hyundai Tucson gives you a crossover at close to sedan money. The Camry is comfortable for four adults with luggage. The Jimny is popular for Hatta and gravel tracks, but its boot is small. Beyond 250 km a day, each extra kilometre costs AED 2 on the 2023 Tucson and AED 1 on the other cars in the table.

The fleet also has partner cars at similar prices, such as the Kia Pegas or Suzuki Baleno from AED 109 a day. They come with their own terms: a deposit of AED 1,000, a minimum of 7 days, delivery at AED 80 each way and no driving to Oman, all shown on the car page. For a month-long stay the monthly rate is the best value: a Raize for 30 days costs AED 2,490, while four weeks at the weekly rate would come to AED 3,000.
