Why rent a car for New Year in Dubai

The New Year week is one of the busiest periods of the year in Dubai. Hotels are full, roads are packed with visitors, and malls, beaches and desert spots are crowded from morning to night. A car gives you the one thing that matters in these days: you decide when to leave and where to go, and you do not depend on a taxi queue.

The evening of 31 December is different from any other day, though. Around Downtown and Burj Khalifa traffic is organised in a special way, and driving there as usual will not work. Below are general principles without exact schedules: closures and public transport hours are announced officially each year, so check them closer to the date.

What happens on the roads on 31 December

The main attraction on New Year's Eve is the area around Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. You should expect the following:

  • some streets around Downtown are closed or open only to certain vehicles, and access points change during the evening;
  • approaches to Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road have longer queues than usual in the evening;
  • car parks at Dubai Mall and nearby hotels fill up early, and street spaces are taken by the afternoon;
  • after midnight, leaving the centre takes noticeably longer because everyone moves at the same time.

We do not quote exact hours or routes for closures because they change from year to year. Follow the official announcements and ask your hotel, which usually knows the current arrangement.

How to plan the evening with a rental car

There are three workable scenarios, and the choice depends on where you want to be at midnight.

ScenarioHow it worksWhat to keep in mind
Fireworks at Burj KhalifaYou arrive early, leave the car far from the centre and cover the last stretch on foot or by metroArrive several hours ahead, nearby parking is not guaranteed
Dinner at a hotel or restaurantYou drive to your hotel or restaurant, often with parking on siteAsk in advance whether there is parking and whether special access rules apply
Beach or desert nightYou leave the city during the day and come back on the morning of 1 JanuaryFill the tank beforehand, take water and warm clothes for the night

If you plan to drink, do not drive. This is a simple rule and it is strictly enforced in Dubai. Agree on a sober driver or plan the way back by taxi.

Book early

New Year dates, like the whole high season, are taken first. The closer to 31 December, the fewer models are left, especially family SUVs and minivans. If you want a specific car, book early rather than a couple of days before the trip.

The prices below are as of October 2026, and the current price is always on the car page:

  • Toyota Raize 2024: 109 AED per day, 750 AED per week, 2,490 AED per month. A compact option for a couple, easy to park;
  • Mazda CX-5 2024: 170 AED per day, 1,100 AED per week, 3,750 AED per month. A comfortable crossover for four;
  • Mitsubishi Outlander 2024: 200 AED per day, 1,300 AED per week, 4,400 AED per month, 7 seats;
  • Hyundai Staria 11-seater, 2024: 350 AED per day, 2,100 AED per week, 7,000 AED per month. Suits a big group travelling in one vehicle.

Most cars need no deposit, and insurance and 250 km per day are included. If a car has a deposit or a minimum rental period, it is shown on its page.

Delivery and return during the holidays

On rentals of 7 days or more, delivery and return anywhere in Dubai are free. For shorter rentals, delivery and return together cost 210 AED. This is handy in New Year week: the car is brought to your hotel and you do not have to cross a busy city to collect it. Some partner cars have their own delivery terms, shown on the car page.

Our office in Princess Tower, Dubai Marina, is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00. If you want to return the car on a holiday, agree the time in advance.

Alternatives: when you do not need to drive

You do not have to drive to the fireworks yourself. Many visitors rent a car for the whole week, then leave it at the hotel on the night itself and go to the centre by metro or taxi. Metro and taxi arrangements for the night are announced beforehand, so check them. That way you use the car for daytime trips such as Abu Dhabi, Hatta or the east coast, and spend the evening of 31 December without parking stress.

One more reminder: speeding fines and Salik tolls are paid by the renter at actual cost. Roads empty out at night on holidays, and it is easy to creep above the limit without noticing, so watch the speed limits.
