Why Mleiha
Mleiha is an area in the Sharjah desert, inland from the coast, known for its archaeological sites and the dramatic rock formations around it. It is quiet, uncrowded and very different from the glass towers of Dubai. People come for a mix of history (settlements, tombs and a fort from different ages), landscape (gravel plains, dunes and low mountains) and a desert evening. It works well as a half-day or full-day trip if you have already seen Dubai Marina and Downtown and want something with space.
Distance from Dubai depends on where you start: roughly 80 to 100 km one way, a little over an hour on good highways. Figures are approximate. A return trip plus some driving in the area normally fits into the 250 km per day included in our rentals, but check the total on your map before you go.
The Sharjah desert road
The drive itself is part of the point. After leaving the city and its suburbs, the road crosses flat desert with wide sky, sand on both sides and few buildings. Along the way you can see the old village of Al Madam, which was abandoned and is now partly covered by sand. It is a short stop and a good photo spot, but look from the roadside and do not climb into unsafe buildings.
The road is fully paved. The main hazards are simple ones: sand blowing across the asphalt in windy weather, camels near the road in some areas, and long empty stretches where speed creeps up. Posted limits are usually 100 or 120 km/h, and cameras work in the desert as well. Fines are paid by the renter at actual cost. Salik applies only inside Dubai, so you may pass a gate when leaving the city: AED 6.30 in peak hours (Monday to Saturday, 6:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00), AED 4.20 otherwise, and free from 1:00 to 6:00.
What to see: Fossil Rock and the archaeological area
- Fossil Rock. A limestone outcrop rising from the desert floor, with marine fossils in the rock. It is a landmark, a quiet place for a walk and a photo, and a reminder that this land was once under the sea.
- The archaeological area. Excavations in the Mleiha area have found traces of settlements and graves from thousands of years, and a fort. The visitor centre is the best starting point; check opening times and any entry rules on the day, because they change.
- Desert evening. Many visitors stay for sunset and the stars, since there is almost no light pollution. Bring warm clothes in winter, as it gets cold after dark.
Sedan or SUV
For the paved road and the main visitor areas a sedan is enough. You need an SUV only if you want to go off the asphalt, and then it must be a proper four-wheel-drive vehicle and you must be a confident driver on sand. Never go alone into soft sand, drive with a second car if you leave the track, and tell someone where you are going. Our separate guide on desert driving with a rental car covers the technique.
Important: partner cars cannot go off-road. They have their own terms, shown on each car page, and driving off the asphalt is not allowed. If you plan to leave the paved road at all, ask us which cars it is allowed on before you book. Do not assume that any SUV can go on sand.
Prices are as of October 2026; the current price is on each car page.

Practical tips
Go between October and April, when the temperature is comfortable. In summer midday the desert is dangerously hot, and an empty fuel tank is not a risk to take. Fill up and check the tyres and water before leaving the city. Phone coverage is usually fine on the main road but not guaranteed in side areas, so download the map for offline use. Take water, sun protection, closed shoes and a charged phone. If the weather turns windy and dusty, shorten the trip. We are happy to help you choose the right car and explain the terms before booking.
