Americans land in Dubai both for a two-day stopover on the way to Asia and for a full holiday. A car is useful in either case: distances are long, and a taxi for every trip quickly costs more than a day's rental of a compact sedan. Here is what US visitors usually ask us.
Do you need an International Driving Permit?
No. The United States is on the list of countries whose national licences are accepted in the UAE without an International Driving Permit (IDP). The list is approved by the Ministry of Interior and applies in every emirate. The licence must be issued in the US and be in Latin script, which yours is. We hand over the car on that one document, and a police officer at a roadside stop will not ask for more.
One detail: it is the country that issued the licence that counts, not your passport. An American citizen holding a licence from another country follows the rule for that country. If you are unsure, write to us before booking.
The rule is for visitors only. With a UAE residence visa you cannot drive on a foreign licence, and you need a local one. Holders of licences from recognised countries normally exchange them at an RTA centre in a day without a test.
What to bring
- Passport with a valid UAE visa or entry stamp.
- US driving licence, the original, valid for the whole rental.
- Age and experience: 21 or older with at least a year of driving. There is no young-driver fee. A few supercars have stricter terms, shown on the car page.
- A second driver: bring their licence and passport to the handover so they can be added to the contract.
What feels familiar and what does not
Traffic keeps to the right, the wheel is on the left, just like home. There is nothing to relearn. The differences are in the details:
- Speed is in km/h. A 120 km/h sign is roughly 75 mph and 100 km/h about 62 mph. Sheikh Zayed Road is posted at 100 or 120 km/h depending on the stretch, and the car's speedometer is in km/h too.
- Enforcement is by camera. In Dubai cameras typically record from about 21 km/h over the limit, while Abu Dhabi has no margin at all. There is no officer with a radar, but the fine finds you later.
- Right on red. Do not assume it is allowed. Follow the signal and any sign at the junction.
- Roundabouts run anti-clockwise as in the US, and you give way to traffic from the left. On large multi-lane ones, pick your lane early.
- Lane changes on multi-lane highways are frequent and sometimes abrupt, so check mirrors and blind spots more than you would at home.
Cars American visitors ask for
Many people want something familiar from home, and the fleet has it. Prices are as of October 2026, and the current price is on each car page.
| Car | Day, AED | Week, AED | Month, AED |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible 2024, 315 hp | 300 | 1,800 | 6,000 |
| Ford Mustang GT Convertible 2024, 486 hp | 450 | 2,700 | 9,000 |
| Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 2023, 485 hp | 450 | 2,700 | 9,000 |
| Chevrolet Tahoe 2024, 8 seats | 350 | 2,100 | 7,000 |
| GMC Yukon Denali 2024, 7 seats, 6.2 L | 500 | 3,000 | 10,000 |
| Ford F-150 Raptor 2024, 450 hp | 900 | 5,220 | 17,100 |
For orientation, the dirham is firmly pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725, so conversion is easy. The Mustang EcoBoost at AED 300 a day is about USD 82, the Tahoe at AED 350 about USD 95. A family with luggage will be happier in an SUV, while a couple on a winter week will enjoy a convertible: in winter you can drive with the roof down during the day without overheating.
Payment: what to know with a US card
We accept cash, bank cards and e-wallets. Visa and Mastercard cards from US banks generally work in the UAE without trouble. Tell your bank about the trip so the first overseas payment is not flagged. When you pay by card, the rental amount may be held as a pre-authorisation and charged at the end, so check that your limit covers it.
Most cars need no deposit. If a car does, it is shown on its page: some cars come from a partner company with its own terms, a deposit of AED 1,000 and a minimum rental of 3 or 7 days. Insurance is included in the price.
Where to drive
250 km per day is included, which is about 155 miles. That covers the city and most outings. Popular trips: Abu Dhabi with the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, about 140 km (87 miles) and an hour and a half on the highway; Hatta in the mountains, about 130 km; and Al Ain with its oasis and the Jebel Hafeet road, also about 130 km on a straight highway. All three are on paved roads, so four-wheel drive only matters if you plan to go into the desert.
Salik, parking and handover
Salik toll gates have no barriers: a tag built into the car is read as you pass. At peak times, Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, a crossing costs AED 6.30, at other times AED 4.20, on Sundays a flat AED 4.20, and from 1:00 to 6:00 it is free. Salik and speeding fines are paid by the renter at actual cost with no markup. Parking in Dubai is paid almost everywhere and linked to the number plate through an app or meter.
On rentals of 7 days or more, delivery and return anywhere in Dubai are free. For shorter rentals, delivery and return together cost AED 210. Our office is in Princess Tower, Dubai Marina, open daily 10:00 to 19:00, with Russian-speaking support. Driving to Oman is not allowed on every car and not on partner cars, so ask when booking.
