Air Astana, FlyArystan, flydubai and Emirates fly from Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and Aktau to Dubai several times a day. Kazakhstan citizens need no visa for 30 days, their bank cards work without restriction, and Kazakh driving licences are accepted by most rental companies. That makes renting a car simpler for a visitor from Kazakhstan than for many other nationalities. Questions still come up, so here they are in one place.

Is a Kazakh licence accepted

The current Kazakh driving licence is bilingual with Latin-script entries, and most Dubai rental companies accept it without an International Driving Permit. Formally, Kazakhstan is not on the list of countries whose licences the UAE recognises for driving without an IDP, so at a police stop and, more importantly, after an accident, the IDP removes all doubt: the insurer checks whether the driver was formally entitled to drive. Our advice is to get the IDP at home through a public service centre or egov.kz; it costs about 2,000 tenge and takes a day. If you did not, we can arrange a digital IDP on the spot for AED 250.

Older licences without Latin script are accepted only with an IDP. Driving experience must be at least one year, the same for every car. Minimum age is 21.

Paying with Kazakh cards

Kaspi Gold, Halyk, Freedom, ForteBank, Jusan and other Kazakh bank cards work in the UAE like any Visa or Mastercard. You can pay for the rental, fuel, parking and fines online. The one thing to think about in advance is conversion. Kaspi debits in tenge at its own rate via the dollar, and on a large amount the gap between banks reaches 2 to 3 percent. Freedom and Halyk offer multi-currency accounts where dirham payments go through closer to the market rate. Before the trip, switch on notifications and check your foreign transaction limit; Kaspi's default may be lower than a premium car requires.

We accept cards, cash in dirhams and transfers. We take no deposit in any form and block nothing on your card. That matters if your card limit is modest: other companies block AED 1,500 to 3,000 for two to four weeks, which wrecks a holiday budget.

Cash

Tenge can be exchanged in Dubai, but at a poor rate with a 5 to 8 percent loss. Dollars and euros are exchanged at any Al Ansari or Al Fardan branch in the malls at better rates than the airport. Any amount can be brought into the UAE, with a declaration from AED 60,000. Kazakhstan allows up to USD 10,000 per person out without a declaration.

Which cars Kazakh visitors choose

Visitors from Kazakhstan are used to SUVs, and in Dubai that makes sense: the Nissan Patrol is a mainstream car here, not a luxury, and costs AED 450 a day. For a family week we suggest the Patrol Titanium, Toyota Fortuner or Kia Sorento; for a couple in the city the Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos; for a group the 11-seat Hyundai Staria. For a special occasion people take the Mercedes G63, Lamborghini Urus and the Mustang and BMW convertibles. For monthly winter stays the Corolla, Sportage and Sorento are the most popular.

Rules that differ from Kazakhstan

  • A 20 km/h speeding tolerance in Dubai, but zero in Abu Dhabi. Cameras every 2 to 3 km, fines from AED 300.
  • Zero alcohol tolerance. Not a single glass of wine at dinner if you drive afterwards.
  • Phone in hand while driving: AED 800 and 4 black points, and the cameras detect it.
  • Paid parking from 8 am to 10 pm except Sundays, paid via the Parkin app or SMS from a local number.
  • Salik tolls charged automatically to the car, no barriers, AED 4.20 to 6.30 per crossing.
  • Seat belts on every seat, children under 4 in a car seat, under 10 not in the front.
  • The left lane is for overtaking only; driving slowly in it costs AED 400.
  • Sudden lane changes and cutting in: AED 1,000, and Dubai fines this by camera.

Connectivity and navigation

Kazakh operators offer roaming in the UAE, but a local du or Etisalat SIM from the airport is better value: a tourist package with data costs AED 50 to 100, and SMS parking payments work only from a local number. Google Maps works perfectly; 2GIS also covers Dubai and knows buildings well.

Airport and delivery

Flights from Kazakhstan land at DXB: Air Astana and Emirates at Terminals 1 and 3, flydubai and FlyArystan at Terminal 2. We meet you at the arrivals exit at any hour, and on rentals from 7 days delivery is free. Many flights land before dawn, which is not a problem.

Seasonal prices

Demand from Kazakhstan peaks during the winter school holidays and in March, when Dubai is 25 degrees warmer than Almaty. Book two to three weeks ahead; Patrols and seven-seaters go first. In summer prices drop by a third, and a monthly rental for those escaping the Astana heat by the sea starts at AED 1,700.

Direct flights and arrival logistics

Air Astana flies to Dubai from Almaty and Astana, FlyArystan from Almaty, Astana and Shymkent, flydubai from most large cities and Emirates from Almaty. Flight time is 4.5 to 5.5 hours, with Dubai two hours behind Almaty and Astana.

Most flights from Kazakhstan arrive late evening or overnight, with returns departing early morning. That suits rental planning: collect the car at night and return it in the morning a few days later, paying for exactly the days you used. We charge no surcharge for night handovers.

Air Astana and Emirates land at Terminals 1 and 3, flydubai and FlyArystan at Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is small with a single exit, making it the easiest place to find your driver.

What the whole trip costs

A calculation for a family of four for a week in February, the most common Kazakh travel pattern.

Kia Sportage for 7 days: AED 1,140. Fuel with active driving: AED 250. Salik and parking: AED 150. Child seat: AED 175. Total around AED 1,715 for the week for the whole family.

By comparison, taxis on the same schedule would come to AED 3,500 to 4,000, with group excursions to Abu Dhabi and the desert for four adding another AED 2,000. The car saves roughly AED 4,000 over a week.

What visitors from Kazakhstan ask most

Can two of us share the driving? Yes, we add a second driver to the contract free of charge; they need the same documents: licence, IDP where required, and passport. If someone not named in the contract drives, the insurance does not apply.

What if my licence has no Latin script? Such licences require an IDP. We arrange a digital one on the spot for AED 250, ready the same day.

Can I drive to Oman? In economy and mid-size cars on rentals of three days or more, with a permission letter and Omani insurance. Kazakh citizens apply for the Omani visa online.

Does Kaspi Pay QR work here? No, that system does not operate in the UAE. Only the physical Kaspi Gold card works, as an ordinary Visa.

Is there Russian-language support? Yes, all communication runs on WhatsApp in Russian, including roadside help and dealing with fines.

What to bring from home

  • Your national licence, plus an IDP if the licence has no Latin script.
  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • A bank card with international transactions enabled and a verified limit.
  • Cash in new US dollar notes for day-to-day expenses.
  • Medical insurance covering the UAE.
  • A Type G plug adapter, the British standard used throughout the UAE.
  • No need for child seats; we supply ours at AED 25 a day.

Medicines: some common drugs are restricted or banned in the UAE, including anything containing codeine and strong painkillers. If you carry prescription medication, bring the prescription with an English translation.

Rule differences people most often forget

Alcohol tolerance is zero in the UAE, and enforcement is stricter than most visitors expect: testing follows every accident, however minor, and checkpoints operate near districts with bars.

Speed limits look similar to those at home, but UAE cameras stand every 2 to 3 km and run continuously rather than selectively. The habit of assuming there is no camera on a given stretch does not apply here.

Parking is paid almost everywhere in Dubai from 8:00 to 22:00 except Sundays. Unpaid parking costs AED 150, and camera-equipped patrol cars cruise the streets constantly.

Turning right on red is prohibited throughout the UAE except at junctions with a specific sign permitting it.
