Car Rental or Taxi in Dubai: Which Actually Costs Less

The question people ask most before booking is whether taxis would be simpler. The answer depends on three things: how much you travel, where you stay and whether you plan trips beyond the centre. Below are the numbers for September 2026 and three worked scenarios.

What taxis cost

Official RTA tariffs: AED 5 flag fall by day and AED 5.5 at night from 22:00 to 6:00, then AED 1.97 per kilometre, with a AED 12 minimum fare. From the airport the flag fall is AED 25 instead of 5. Waiting time is AED 0.5 a minute. Taxis from Al Maktoum airport cost more because of the distance.

Careem and Uber operate legally in Dubai at 10 to 20 percent above standard taxi rates, rising to 50 percent during surge pricing. In exchange you order in the app rather than flagging one down.

Typical fares: Marina to Dubai Mall AED 60 to 70, Marina to DXB airport AED 100 to 120, Downtown to the Palm AED 50 to 60, Deira to JBR AED 80 to 90, Dubai to Abu Dhabi AED 300 to 350 one way.

What the metro and buses cost

Metro fares run AED 3 to 7.5 per trip on a Nol card depending on zones, with a AED 20 day pass. The Red Line runs along Sheikh Zayed Road from the airport through Downtown to the Marina and Jebel Ali; the Green Line covers Deira and Bur Dubai. The metro is fast, clean and air-conditioned, running on elevated track free of traffic.

The problem is coverage: the metro does not reach Palm Jumeirah, the Jumeirah beaches, Al Qudra, Global Village, Dubai Parks, the water parks or anything else off the main corridor. From the station to your destination is usually another 10 to 20 minutes by taxi, adding AED 20 to 30 to every journey.

Scenario 1. A couple, three days, hotel in the Marina

Taxis: airport return AED 220, two or three city trips a day at AED 50 to 70, so AED 450 to 630 over three days. Total AED 670 to 850. Plus no chance of a sunrise trip to the lakes or a spontaneous change of beach.

Car: Kia Pegas at AED 75 a day, so AED 225 for three days. Fuel AED 60, Salik AED 30, parking AED 40. Total AED 355.

Verdict: the car costs almost half as much, before counting the freedom of movement.

Scenario 2. A family of four, one week, with Abu Dhabi and Hatta planned

Taxis: airport return AED 240 in a large taxi, five or six family trips a day at AED 70 to 90, so AED 2,500 to 3,200 for the week. A day in Abu Dhabi by taxi AED 700, or a tour at AED 250 per person meaning AED 1,000 for four. Hatta by taxi AED 500. Total AED 4,200 to 4,900.

Car: Kia Sportage at AED 1,140 for the week. Fuel AED 200, Salik AED 60, parking AED 100, child seat AED 175. Total AED 1,675.

Verdict: nearly a threefold difference, and the family is not waiting for taxis with tired children in forty-degree heat.

Scenario 3. A business trip, three days, meetings in Downtown and DIFC

Taxis: hotel near the offices, two or three trips a day at AED 20 to 30, so AED 150 to 250 over three days. Using the metro for some journeys costs even less.

Car: AED 300 for three days plus office tower parking at AED 10 to 20 an hour, easily AED 200 over three days. Total around AED 550, plus hunting for spaces at peak times.

Verdict: here taxis or the metro are cheaper and calmer, and a car is unnecessary.

When you do not need a car

• A hotel in Downtown or by a metro station with plans limited to the centre and the malls.
• A two-day trip with one or two outings.
• You do not drive on the right and would rather not learn on holiday.
• Many dinners with alcohol are planned: the UAE has zero tolerance, and after one glass of wine the car becomes a liability.
• You are travelling alone and staying within one district.

When you do need one

• More than three days with at least two trips a day.
• A family with children, luggage, a pushchair and beach kit.
• Plans outside the centre: the Jumeirah beaches, the desert, Abu Dhabi, Hatta, the east coast, Al Ain.
• A hotel or apartment far from the metro: the Palm, JBR, Dubai Hills, Damac Hills, Arabian Ranches.
• A rental of a month or more: daily taxis cost AED 3,000 to 5,000 a month against AED 1,700 to 3,000 for a car with everything included.
• You want to travel on your own schedule and leave when you choose rather than when a car arrives.

The middle path: rent for part of the trip

Many clients rent not for the whole holiday but for the days with excursions: Tuesday and Thursday for Abu Dhabi and the desert, using the metro and taxis in the centre on other days. On rentals from 7 days our delivery and collection are free; on shorter rentals delivery and collection cost AED 210, but even then it beats paying for a car sitting in the hotel car park. This is often the cheapest arrangement of all.

Hidden costs on both sides

With taxis: waiting in the heat, surge pricing on Careem, no way to leave belongings in the car, extra trips to retrieve forgotten items, and the airport tariff. With a car: parking, Salik, fuel, the risk of fines and the need to find a space. Hidden costs on a car typically run AED 30 to 50 a day, and taxis reach roughly the same in surcharges and waiting.

Taxis in Dubai: types and quirks

RTA city taxis are cream-coloured with roof colours indicating the operator. The cheapest and most common, hailed on the street or booked on 800 88088. They run on the meter.

Pink taxis with female drivers, intended for women and families. The same fare, booked through the same app.

Airport taxis carry a AED 25 flag fall instead of 5 and queue at a dedicated rank by the terminal.

Careem and Uber work through apps with the price known in advance and payment by card or cash. Categories run from economy to business.

Hala Taxi inside the Careem app is an ordinary city taxi booked through the app, often the cheapest option of all.

All taxis in the UAE are licensed, the meter is mandatory, and haggling is neither customary nor necessary.

The hidden inconveniences of taxis

• Waiting in the heat. Five minutes waiting on the street in July is a genuine ordeal, and at popular spots at rush hour the wait runs 10 to 15 minutes.
• Nowhere to leave belongings. Shopping, beach bags and pushchairs have to be carried all day.
• Child seats. Taxis do not have them, yet by law children under 4 must travel in one. Technically this is an offence the driver answers for, but in practice families with toddlers travel this way constantly.
• No spontaneity. Stopping somewhere you spot along the way or changing your route is harder.
• Getting back from remote places. From the desert at Al Qudra or a distant beach a taxi may take half an hour to arrive, or not come at all.

The hybrid approach

For many trips the optimal pattern looks like this. The first two days without a car: a central hotel, metro and taxis around Downtown and the Marina, getting to know the city without the stress of driving somewhere unfamiliar.

Days three and four with a car: Abu Dhabi, the desert, Hatta or the east coast, meaning everywhere public transport does not reach. The car arrives at your hotel in the morning and is collected on the evening of the second day.

The final days without a car again: beach, malls and restaurants within walking distance, with an airport transfer by taxi or in our car with a driver.

This approach saves 30 to 40 percent against renting for the whole stay and removes the parking question on days when a car is not needed.

Scenario 4. A couple for two weeks, hotel in Jumeirah

Taxis: airport AED 220, three or four city trips a day at AED 50 to 70, so about AED 2,500 over two weeks. Plus two out-of-town trips by taxi or tour at AED 1,200. Total AED 3,900.

A car for the whole stay: a Kia Seltos for 14 days at the weekly rate AED 1,960, fuel AED 350, Salik AED 150, parking AED 250. Total AED 2,710.

A car for 6 of the 14 days: AED 900 plus AED 350 running costs, with AED 1,200 of taxis on the other days. Total AED 2,450.

The hybrid approach wins, but the gap against full rental is small while full rental offers more freedom. With a hotel in Jumeirah, far from the metro, renting for the whole stay is justified.

Monthly rental versus taxis in detail
