Dubai drives on the right, as in continental Europe, the Americas and Russia, but there are details worth preparing for: many lanes, fast lane changes and roundabouts where it is not always obvious who gives way. This is a general overview for visitors. Signs, road markings and traffic lights always come before any advice in this article.
How a roundabout works
In the UAE roundabouts run anti-clockwise and the steering wheel is on the left. The principle is simple: traffic already on the roundabout has priority, and the car entering gives way to traffic approaching from the left. For drivers from continental Europe, North America or Russia this is the familiar pattern. For drivers from the UK, Australia or Japan it is the mirror image, and the first few roundabouts should be taken more slowly than feels necessary.
In practice: approach, slow down, look left, judge the gap and enter only when it is safe. Do not count on being waved through out of politeness: local drivers often move with confidence and expect the same from others.
Choosing a lane on a multi-lane roundabout
Large junctions have two or three lanes and traffic lights. One principle helps here: choose the lane early, from the arrows on the tarmac and the signs above the road. As a general practice the right lane suits the first exit and right turns, and the left lane suits later exits and U-turns, but that is only a habit. The markings and signs at the particular junction decide.
- Signal before you leave the roundabout, not after.
- Check the mirror and the blind spot before exiting: a car may be alongside you in the next lane.
- If you miss your exit, go round again or carry on to the next exit. Do not brake in the middle of the roundabout or reverse.
- Do not change lanes on the roundabout itself without a good reason.
Lane discipline on ordinary roads
Main roads have several lanes each way. The left lane is for overtaking: pass, then move back to the right. Staying in the left lane at low speed is considered discourteous, and drivers behind may flash their headlights. Do not take it personally, just move right when it is safe.
The rules for changing lanes are the same as at home: signal, check the mirror and blind spot, and cross only a broken line. Do not cross a solid line. Keep a larger gap than you are used to: at high speed that reduces the chance of a collision if the car ahead brakes hard.
Sheikh Zayed Road: lanes and exits
This is Dubai's main artery: several lanes each way, a limit of 100 or 120 km/h depending on the section, and Salik gates along it. For a newcomer the difficulty is the interchanges: exits often follow one another, and the sign you need appears shortly before the turn.
- Set the navigation before you leave and note which lane it recommends for your exit. Move over 1 to 2 kilometres ahead, not at the last moment.
- If you miss your exit, do not brake or reverse. Carry on to the next one and turn back.
- Read the area names on the signs: Dubai Marina, Downtown, Al Barsha. They help you orient yourself even before the navigation speaks.
- Drive through Salik gates without stopping: the tag is already in the car. Rates are AED 6.30 at peak hours (6:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday) and AED 4.20 at other times.
Merging at entry ramps
On a slip road, accelerate to the speed of the traffic and merge, giving way to cars already on the main road. Do not stop at the end of the ramp: it is hard to restart and the traffic behind is moving fast. If there is a dense column alongside, slow down and find a gap rather than forcing your way in. The opposite also happens: drivers on the main road may move over to give you room, but do not rely on it.
What helps a newcomer: suitable cars
On multi-lane roads a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are a real help. Prices are as of October 2026, and the current price is on each car page.
| Model | Per day, AED | Per week, AED | Per month, AED | What helps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Raize 2024 | 109 | 750 | 2,490 | compact size, rear-view camera |
| Hyundai Sonata 2024 | 160 | 1,040 | 3,500 | 360 camera, adaptive cruise |
| Kia K5 2024 | 170 | 1,100 | 3,750 | 360 camera, blind-spot monitoring |
| Mitsubishi Outlander 2024 | 200 | 1,300 | 4,400 | 360 camera, adaptive cruise, 7 seats |
These cars come with no deposit and a one-day minimum rental. A partner car has its own terms: the deposit and minimum period are shown on its page.
In short
Give way to traffic already on the roundabout, look left, pick your lane early, do not change lanes at the last moment and do not be afraid to take one exit too far. Panic braking is more dangerous than a small detour. If anything is unclear, ask us at handover.
